Adding a Zamel device to your SUPLA account (Wi-Fi and the SUPLA app)

Before HEMS can read a meter, the device must be connected to Wi-Fi and added to your SUPLA account. You do this once — with the SUPLA app on your phone or manually in a browser.

10 steps approx. 10 min one-time
Create account

What you will need

  • A phone with the SUPLA app (Android or iOS) and location enabled
  • A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network with internet access where the device is installed
  • The device installed and powered by an electrician
  • A SUPLA account (e-mail and password)

Step by step

  1. Install the app and create a SUPLA account

Get the SUPLA app from Google Play or the App Store (addresses from the Zamel manual: supla.org/android and supla.org/ios). Sign in or choose “Create account” and enter your e-mail and a password. You will later use the same account for the HEMS token.

  2. Check the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi

Zamel SUPLA devices connect only to a 2.4 GHz network (802.11 b/g/n), not to 5 GHz. If your router uses one name for both bands and adding fails, enable a separate 2.4 GHz network on the router. Check the signal where the device is installed — a metal switchboard weakens it; there are external-antenna versions for such places (e.g. MEW-01/ANT).

  3. Connect power and look at the STATUS LED

The device is installed and wired by an electrician according to the diagram in the Zamel manual. On newer devices (e.g. MEW-02, LIW-03 ETH), after power-up the STATUS LED blinks twice at regular intervals — the device is waiting for configuration.

  4. Enter configuration mode

Hold the CONFIG button on the device. On newer devices hold it for 5 seconds until the STATUS LED starts blinking fast — the mode lasts 5 minutes. On older ones (e.g. LIW-01, LEW-01) hold it until the LED starts pulsing.

  5. Start the wizard in the app

App menu → “Add device”. Allow the app to access location — the phone needs it to find Wi-Fi networks. Continue from the wizard start screen.

  6. Enter your home network

On the “Network password” screen choose or type the name of your 2.4 GHz network and its password. The device uses them to connect to the internet.

  7. Connect the phone to the device

When the LED behaves like the animation in the app, tap “Start” (older wizard) or “Join” (newer) — the phone briefly connects to the Wi-Fi network broadcast by the device. If several devices are in configuration mode, choose the right one from the list.

  8. Account password and device password

If adding devices is disabled in SUPLA Cloud, the app asks for your SUPLA account password. Newer devices also ask you to create a password protecting the device settings: at least 8 characters, including an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter and a digit. Write it down — you need it for every settings change in the browser.

  9. Wait for the cloud connection

After the device-added message, the STATUS LED lights steadily once the device has connected to the cloud. On the first addition the LED may blink very fast and irregularly for a while — this is a firmware update; do not disconnect power.

  10. Check the device in SUPLA Cloud

Sign in at cloud.supla.org → “My SUPLA”. The device and its channels are listed. Here you name the channels and, for LIW, set the function (energy, water, gas), impulses per unit and the price. Then connect the device to HEMS — see the guide for your model (personal token and channel ID).

STATUS LEDMeaning
Double blinks at regular intervalsPower connected, device not in configuration mode (newer models)
Fast blinking (newer) or pulsing (older)Configuration mode — the device can be added
Slow pulsing at regular intervalsDevice configured, connecting to the cloud
Steady lightConnected to the SUPLA cloud — ready
Very fast, irregular blinkingFirmware update — do not switch off power

Mounting in the switchboard, current transformers and wiring the impulse output are done by an electrician according to the Zamel manual supplied with the device.

Based on the Zamel manuals (LIW-01, LIW-03 ETH, MEW-02, SBW-01, LEW-01). Screen names may differ slightly between SUPLA app versions.

Questions and problems

The app wizard fails — how do I add it manually?

Enter configuration mode. On a phone or computer connect to the Wi-Fi network whose name starts with “ZAMEL-” and the device symbol (e.g. ZAMEL-LIW-01-, followed by the serial number). The phone will show “no internet” — that is normal. Open 192.168.4.1 in a browser, enter your home network name and password and press “SAVE” — “Data saved!” appears. Briefly press CONFIG to confirm. Once connected, the LED lights steadily.

The page 192.168.4.1 does not open

Type the full address http://192.168.4.1 and open it in a private (incognito) window — Zamel recommends this for older device versions. Check that the phone is still connected to the “ZAMEL-…” network; some phones switch to a network with internet on their own.

Message that device registration is disabled

Sign in at cloud.supla.org, enable adding (registration of) devices in the “My SUPLA” tab and repeat adding. The newer app asks for the SUPLA account password instead.

Configuration mode switched off by itself

On newer devices it lasts 5 minutes. Hold CONFIG again for 5 seconds and repeat the wizard.

I changed the router or Wi-Fi password

Enter configuration mode and provide the new network details — with the wizard or manually at 192.168.4.1. Newer devices ask for the protection password.

I forgot the protection password

According to the Zamel manual you can change the password in SUPLA Cloud. The last resort is a factory reset — it erases the password and network settings.

How do I restore factory settings?

Hold CONFIG until the LED blinks fast, release, hold again — the LED blinks once — and release. The device restarts in configuration mode and must be added again. Then check in SUPLA Cloud that the channel ID is the same as in HEMS.

Can I connect LIW-03 ETH with a cable?

It has an RJ45 Ethernet port, but the Zamel manual describes adding it via Wi-Fi (wizard and configuration mode) — add it like the other devices.
